For most tourists, the region of central Crete is primarily associated with places such as Rethymno or Heraklion, which is the capital of the island. A large part of people will also certainly mention one, or maybe even several, of the numerous tourist towns scattered along the northern coast. However, when you ask these people about places where you can feel the true nature of Crete, in most cases they will indicate on the map those that are somewhere on the south coast, or on the far eastern or western end of the island. It turns out, however, that staying in the area of Heraklion, it is enough to move away from this city by only 25 kilometers to find yourself in much more wild areas of Crete. Today, we would like to invite you to a virtual tour of such places through the film by Giannis Psaroudakis, who went with his camera to the area of the Psiloritis massif.
During his trip, he visited a very charming female monastery of Agia Irini, considered one of the oldest objects of this type located in the province of Malevizi. Following the picturesque dirt road, he crossed the Chalasia gorge and then reached the Vromoneros plateau. You have to admit that even in the movie these places are impressive. By overcoming the next steep serpentines, you can reach the town of Asfentamia. From this place there is an amazing panorama that only confirms that we are still relatively close to Heraklion. The white buildings of the capital of Crete scattered along the coast are perfectly visible and seem to be literally at your fingertips. And this is not all that this area of Crete can offer you.
