Several decades have passed since the last person diagnosed with Hansen's disease left Spinalonga . Over this long time, the island, which in the middle of the last century was a kind of nightmare prison for leprosy patients, has become one of the most important tourist attractions in Crete. However, the growing popularity and generated revenues did not change the infrastructure available on the island in any significant way. And although it is hard to believe, Spinalonga entered the 21st century without a connection to the national power grid, without access to the water supply network or even without an efficient sewage system. However, it seems that this situation may eventually change.
The mayor of Agios Nikolaos Atonis Zervosa revealed in an interview with Radio Crete that the electrification project of the island has been approved at the central level. The project is to be completed in 2024. The first contracts are to be signed next week.
Electrification is to be the first step in adapting the island's infrastructure to modern requirements. Other goals set by Mayor Atonis Zervosa include connecting Spinalonga to the water supply system and building a biological sewage treatment plant.
We hope that this time we will finally be able to implement at least a project related to pulling an underwater electric cable to Spinalonga. Announcements of such projects have already appeared several times over the last ten years, and so far they have never gone beyond the stage of press announcements.
