We rarely have the opportunity to provide such good information, but today's news will especially please the fans of Cretan excavations. Archaeological excavations are underway in ancient Lissos , located between Paleochora and Sougia in the south of the island, and have already revealed a large part of the public building. The taste of this story is added by the fact that these are the first excavations in this place in 62 years. Certainly, those who have already visited Lissos and have seen the ancient remains of the temple of Asclepius after the completion of the works will have a reason to go back to Lissos. With a pinch of salt, you can also say that this covering is another proof that in Crete it is enough to stick a shovel, and ancient ruins and artifacts will find themselves.

Autonomous Lissos was the port of the Doric city of Elyros, and archaeologists date that it existed between the 4th century BC and the 9th century AD. In our time, from ancient Lissos you can admire quite large ruins of Asclepius with fragments of the original mosaic and later Byzantine chapels.
Access to Lissos is quite limited, which means that this area is only visited by a few tourists. This ancient city is nestled between the hills and has no access road. So you can only get to Lissos via the E4 walking trail, or in the nearby Sougia you can buy a boat trip and get there.
In the first phase of archaeological research, near the Agios Kirikos chapel, two small side vaulted chambers and 14 rows of semicircular benches with a built-in passage were discovered. The age of this find was initially determined at the 1st century AD, i.e. the early Roman period. Most of the intact benches have survived on the south side and are in quite good condition. On the other hand, the benches on the north-west side were heavily damaged, most likely during an earthquake.
In the next phase of archaeological research, scientists will look for the outer wall surrounding this building. This is an important point for a possible restoration of the found building. Nevertheless, the discovery of such an important building in the very center of this ancient city is already a sensation that sheds new light on the history of the area where former Lissos existed.
The excavation project is being carried out by the Eforat Antiquities in Chania with a budget of € 300,000 and funding from the Crete Region Public Investment Program. This project also allowed for the arrangement of sightseeing routes that intersect this archaeological site.
