At the turn of May and June, we usually announce the start of the Caretta caretta turtle breeding season. It is during this period of time that these animals go out to some beaches and lay their eggs. Crete is one of the places where Caretta caretta nests. On the other hand, August is the month when baby turtles are just starting to hatch from the eggs they have laid. The first such "birth" took place two days ago in the town of Stavros in Crete. In the early morning, five little turtles found their way to the sea.

Local tourists staying in Stavros on vacation witnessed this event and it was thanks to them that these moving videos were created. Everyone now expects more young Caretta caretta to be born in other nests in the near future. This year, at the request of a group of Stavros residents who are not indifferent to the fate of these unusual animals, local authorities decided to turn off street lamps at night so that their light would not confuse the newly hatched chicks.
A similar birth may soon take place on other beaches in Crete. It is quite possible that some people will be able to see it in person. Therefore, we would like to give you some tips on how to hatch turtle chicks. These guidelines were developed by the Akrotiri Sea Turtle Civic Group. It is worth getting acquainted with them, the more that not everything is obvious, and people guided by the reflex of the heart can unfortunately more harm to turtles than help them. If the turtles hatch by themselves, they have a 90% chance of further survival. However, when the hatching process is disrupted, their chances are reduced to 25% at most.
- baby turtles are usually born at night or in the morning. Their instinct tells them to follow the light of the moon and stars to reach the sea. That is why it is so important that there is no lighting near the beaches during the breeding season. Artificial light confuses the little ones, which instead of heading towards the water, they start walking towards buildings and streets.
- young turtles must not under any circumstances be touched or carried by hand into the water, as it is absolutely essential for their continued survival that they reach the sea on their own. Such turtles, when put directly into the water, can simply drown. If possible, a better solution is to pave the way for them to the sea.
- if any of you find confused turtles away from the sea, somewhere on the street or next to buildings, you can transport them in a carton with sand. However, they should be released on the beach at least 7-10 meters from the sea, so that the little ones still have a chance to reach the water on their own.
