As part of our website, we have repeatedly informed you that the local government of Crete is fighting for the island of Spinalonga to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The local media repeatedly reported that the submission of documentation is at its final stage and the process is entering a decisive stage. It seemed that everything was well on its way to finally receiving this prestigious award for Spinalonga. Unfortunately, the Greek central authorities have a completely different opinion. Lina Mendoni, the local minister of culture, announced that these dreams are unrealistic and impossible to fulfill. Spinalonga will be entered on the UNESCO list as part of a larger project involving a group of Mediterranean fortified monuments.
The local authorities do not hide their surprise and directly say that in the event of such a notification, the leper island will lose its unique status that distinguishes it from other buildings of this type. Mr. Antonis Zervos, the mayor of Agios Nikolaos, says directly that Spinalonga - the second most visited historical place by tourists in Crete - is just being degraded to the position of a serial monument. This is particularly acute for all those who have put a lot of effort into completing the necessary documentation for submitting Spinalonga to the UNESCO list. Let us recall that this project has been carried out since 2009 with strong financial support, among others, from the Lassithi Prefecture.
The mayor of Agios Nikolaos also emphasized that he does not know what to think about some of the enigmatic statements of the minister, who outlined plans for the use of buildings on the island as part of sustainable development. In some media in Athens, there are information that these will be proposals to start a new activity aimed at serving tourists. In the pages of the local media, the mayor asks the minister: "Will it be a restaurant opened in a former hospital treating leprosy patients, or maybe a hotel in one of the houses there? Will this be the way in which the area of Spinalonga will be used in the future? " Maybe this is why the minister emphasized so much in her statements that entering on the UNESCO list is associated with many limitations and obligations. Are these limitations the real reason for abandoning this process?
One thing is certain, the ministerial plans do not coincide with the interests of the local community. Regardless of who is right in this dispute, withdrawing from the fight to inscribe the island of Spinalonga on the UNESCO World Heritage List is a mistake that not only has an image dimension, but also a failure on the way to giving this monument special protection.
