Aradena Gorge - one step away from the tragedy

A couple of Dutch tourists found out for themselves how easy it is to misjudge the scale of the difficulty of a hiking trail. It was close and the hike through a relatively easy ravine would have ended in a tragic way for them.

Today, two tourists from the Netherlands aged 46 and 51 went to the Aradena Gorge, which has recently become increasingly popular. At about noon, they descended to the bottom of the gorge at the height of the bridge and began their trek towards Marmara Beach. Unfortunately, after about 4 hours of walking, the couple ran out of water and, additionally, they got lost on the trail. In the Aradena Gorge it was about 35 degrees in the shade today. The high walls of the gorge make the bottom of the gorge hot like a stove in the early afternoon in the summer. Fortunately, very dehydrated and exhausted, the Dutch managed to call the emergency number 112. They reported that they felt dizzy due to high temperatures and asked for help.

A search and rescue team was assembled immediately. It is worth emphasizing at this point that there are no special emergency services in Crete. In such cases, usually firefighters, or possibly policemen and volunteers come to the rescue. This was also the case this time. Three firefighters and one policeman set out to find the missing tourists. Shortly after 4 p.m. the lost couple were found, given first aid, and then escorted to the nearby village of Livianiana.

It is not the first time that we have written about such events. Fortunately, today this unpleasant situation has a happy ending. However, hikers are not always so lucky. The hiking trails and gorges of Crete are beautiful places, but you must always remember that in summer the conditions can be very difficult here. The high temperature on the trails must not be underestimated because it can kill. Tourists who have experienced this "adventure" today made a big mistake from the very beginning. It is a terrible idea to descend to Aradena around noon and hike through this gorge in the early afternoon hours. High walls and a narrow ravine accumulate heat, raising the temperature even more.

Before you set off on a trail, you should always get to know the length of the route and its difficulty, calculate the time needed to go on it and prepare yourself accordingly. Unfortunately, these are not some pharmaceuticals and unnecessary poisoning. Ensuring that you are well prepared for the hike is apparently obvious, but many people neglect it. A lot of people come to Crete who want to spend time actively, which is of course cool. However, in summer, due to the temperature, trekking can be very difficult. Something that seems simple is not.

There is no water in many places, and cell phones sometimes lose coverage. On most routes, people are rarely seen, and sometimes not at all. Cretan routes are not only Samaria, where a thousand people travel every day and there are water intakes at every step. Before you go on a hike, the photos of which you have seen somewhere on the Internet, prepare yourself properly and remember to use common sense.

Nieodpowiedzialni ...Wczoraj widzialam film z trekkingu na YT. Na szczęście skończyło się na obiciach,potłuczeniach,wymęczeniu..gość zyje .. Poszedł sam na szlak Agia Roumeli - Sougia ..Przeszedł część...Bezzapasu wody,prowiantu,map,przygotowania,informacji w hotelu...Skrajna nieodpowiedzialność...Potem znajdują kości takich na szlaku...

Dana Gołowacz Nie ma tygodnia bez podobnych historii. Pół biedy jeśli zdążą odnaleźć delikwenta.

To nie jest nietrudny wąwóz. Przeszłam ich tu kilka i ten był całkiem wymagający, w dwie strony można się zmęczyć. Dodatkowo słońca i brak wody do uzupełnienia. Respekt przed dziką Kretą!

Małgorzata Jankowska To taki średniak, ale bez przesady. Też mamy skalę porównawczą bo chodzimy i to niemało. To co ich zgubiło to źle oszacowana ilość wody, zbyt późne wejście w wąwóz. Na fotografiach z akcji ratunkowej nie mieli też nakryć głowy!

Małgorzata Jankowska A jaki wąwóz polecasz na październik dla przeciętnych piechurów (coś tam po z Tatrach chodzi t, ale jue są to najwyższe szczyty). Szukam na Wschodniej Krecie i takiego na 2h, max 3

Jak we wschodniej to trochę zależy gdzie będziesz - jak w okolicy Agios Nikolaos to wąwóz Kritsa, koło Irapetry jest wąwóz Pefki czy Moni Kapsa, ew. trudniejszy Sarakiniko , jak całkiem na wschodzie to Zakres czy Xerocampos.
