Fuel prices are a hot topic not only in Polish media, but also in local news portals in Crete. Horror receipts printed by cash registers at gas stations are the bane of not only local residents, but also tourists. Some people firmly declare that during their holidays they will be forced to limit the number of kilometers traveled by car. This should not come as a surprise, especially when looking at the prices that can be seen on local distributors. Taking into account the weakness of the Polish zloty, the costs of refueling cars are simply very high for Polish tourists.
If you are shocked by fuel prices in Poland, then when you are in Crete, you will certainly remember them with great fondness. The most popular, so-called 95 lead -free, costs around 2.46 € per liter at the local stations (price as of June 24, 2022). After converting at a fairly optimistic exchange rate into PLN, it gives a price of over PLN 11 per liter. Refueling for a typical passenger car with a tank capacity of more than 50 liters currently costs over € 120. For the sake of peace of mind, we will no longer convert this amount into zlotys.
Fuel prices are painful for practically everyone. In an interview with the neakriti.gr portal, the owners of gas stations in Crete said that recently it has become the most popular to buy fuel for small amounts. Most drivers refuel the car for a symbolic € 10-20. These few or a dozen liters of fuel are enough for them to travel to work and shops on a daily basis.
Tourists also change their behavior and habits. Some people plan to completely give up car rental this year or definitely cut back on their holiday travels. Some say that they will limit themselves to exploring the local area or simply stay at the hotel. And all this results not only from the high cost of fuel, but also from the low availability of cars and high rental prices. The most popular cars in the two basic categories are in vain to find in rental companies - especially if you are not interested in renting directly from the airport.
The last two years have significantly changed the car rental market in Crete. Since last year, renting four wheels has been quite troublesome and becomes more and more expensive every year. This is a trend that can be seen not only in Greece but also in many other countries. It is enough to mention, for example, that tourists who have planned their holidays in Italy or Spain complain about the prices. The cost of renting a small car for a period of two weeks can cost even more than PLN 7,000 in popular tourist locations. zloty.
Back in 2017 and 2018, the cost of a weekly C-category car rental in the second half of July in Crete was around € 275. It was a price including full insurance and return to a place other than the place of picking up the car. Today, with such a budget, you can count on much less. There is nothing else but choosing a car of a worse category or accepting that the rental period will be definitely shorter.
When asked about the reasons for such high prices, the owners of the rental companies spread their hands and say that such increases are a component of several factors, but the main ones are: high inflation, a limited number of new cars, which are getting higher every year. It is worth mentioning that in the popular car segment, prices have soared by several dozen percent over the last four years.
What the owners of the rental shop do not mention is the fact that this year's holiday is the first relatively normal tourist season in several years. Some people who put off their foreign vacation plans in previous years finally have the opportunity to travel freely. It should therefore not be surprising that today the interest in renting a car is so great that the number of bookings and inquiries about available dates most likely exceeds the size of the fleet currently available to rental companies. It is obvious then that the prices of car rentals are shaped at the level that customers are still willing to pay. It is expensive, and it will be even more.
And finally, one more point. On various types of groups and websites there are topics about renting a car. Many people bid on these threads for how long they rented the car and how cheap they paid for the service. We propose to be highly skeptical about this information. Often, such persons forget to write (or, what is worse, they are not aware) that the car insurance was not full or that the contract had a significant excess. There is also a tendency to compare the prices paid before or in the low season with the prices offered in the peak tourist season. It is also difficult to compare the cost of renting from a reputable company offering virtually new cars with the cost of renting an old vehicle that is passed on, which is offered in a promotional offer.
