The morning gusty wind that hit the southern coast of Crete this morning caused a lot of trouble for the local vessels. Several smaller boats and pontoons broke off at the mooring ports. The wind was also the cause of two events involving units used in tourist traffic.
The first of them took place on Saturday at 8.30 in the port of Agia Roumeli, where the ship "Apollon K." owned by the carrier Nen Kritis was pushed towards the quay. A collision with the concrete structure of the pier caused damage to the hull and, consequently, caused the vessel to draw water. Fortunately, at the time of this incident, there were no passengers on board, so there was no need to undertake any evacuation action. It is worth noting that as a result of the incident, not one of the crew members who were preparing the vessel for the next voyage at the time of the incident was injured.

The local Port Authority immediately engaged in rescue operations. Among other things, floating barriers have been set up to prevent the spread of pollutants, especially fuel. Fortunately, such an eventuality did not take place and, according to the words of the president of the Sea Transport Society of South Crete, his company "takes full responsibility for this accident". In his words, Apollon K. will depart Agia Roumeli on Sunday noon. At the moment, the crew is working on repairing the damage.
It can be expected that in the coming days there may be some difficulties in the voyages of Apollon K. This unit ran between the ports in the following towns: Paleochora - Sougia - Ag.Roumeli. These cruises were especially popular with people passing through Samaria. It is worth bearing in mind if you are planning a trip to this gorge. We suggest using the services of ANENDYK, i.e. an alternative carrier operating this route.
The next incident took place on Saturday at 5 am in the town of Makry Gialos. A small pirate-style cruise ship Evdokia moored there was pushed towards the coast by the wind. The gusts were so strong that, despite the dropped anchor, the unit was unable to hold its position. As a consequence, Evdokia ran aground.

Also in this case, the port management very quickly took steps to reduce possible environmental pollution. The place where Evdokia settled was completely isolated with inflatable dams. Fortunately, similar to the incident in Ag. Roumeli did not come to such an eventuality.
According to information provided by the shipowner Cretan Daily Crusise, which owns the Evdokia boat, cruises to Koufonisi will resume as soon as weather conditions allow. Unfortunately, they will most likely be implemented by another unit for the time being. Extremely atmospheric Evdokia must undergo a thorough inspection and possible repairs.
