From May 1, Samaria, the most popular gorge in Crete, opened to tourist traffic. However, during the first days, only part of the route was made available, namely the first two kilometers of the route from the southern entrance at Agia Roumeli. Restricting admission to this section only is related to the safety of visitors. There is still a problem with rockfall in the upper part of the trail. In addition, the water level in the river flowing at the bottom of the gorge is still high, which makes it impossible to pass through the narrowest point of the trail, i.e. the Iron Gate. If the water level drops to a safe level and no additional circumstances threatening safety arise, from Wednesday, May 4, the entire route through Samaria will be made available.
According to the information provided, all the necessary maintenance and restoration works on the path have been completed. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that at the moment it is not possible to provide medical help in case of any unforeseen event.
New this year are the admission hours to the gorge. For visitors wishing to walk all or part of the route from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli or Agia Roumeli-Xyloskalo, admission is possible between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM. From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., admission is possible only for people who will move in the first two kilometers from the entrance to the gorge. This means that in these cases only the fragments between Xyloskalo and Neroutsiko and Agia Roumeli-Christos will be negotiable. In any event, visitors must leave Samaria National Park by 18.00 at the latest.
By the way, we would like to remind you that when buying a ticket at the ticket office, keep it with you until you leave the park. When exiting the ravine, you will be asked to present it. It is a safety procedure that allows you to check whether everyone who entered the gorge has left.
As announced by the administration of the gorge, this year a website will be made available through which it will be possible to purchase a ticket on-line.
Along with the opening of the ravine, the price list for this year was made available. The ticket price is the same regardless of whether you plan to cross the entire ravine or just a part of it.
Individual entrance for adults: € 5
Entry for a group of more than 10 people: € 4. However, this only applies to group tours organized by clubs or associations with a founding statute. Entry is possible only after presenting this statute and the list of participants.
Family ticket: € 3 for each family member (parents and underage children).
Individual annual ticket: € 10. When presenting this ticket, an ID card or passport is required.
The administrator also provides for a number of exceptions exempting you from fees for entering the gorge. An example may be EU citizens over 65 or students from EU countries. Ask for details directly at the ticket office.
