March 25 is the day the Greeks celebrate their Independence Day. In the center of Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania, crowds of people gathered to watch the parades organized on this occasion. Also in smaller towns, numerous events were organized that allowed the Greeks to enjoy their holiday. In addition, today's celebrations were favored by beautiful sunny weather, which finally resembled a spring aura. The March sun was an additional magnet that drew people to the parades. This year's March is considered to be the coldest since the 1980s.
Also in Athens, thousands of people took to the streets to watch the military parade. It is also worth recalling that this year's celebrations were the first in two years in which the public could take part. In 2021, these celebrations were closed to the public due to coronavirus-related restrictions, and in 2020 the parade was canceled altogether as part of its containment measures.
The Greek Revolution of 1821 contributed to the creation of the modern Greek state and finally regaining independence. Of course, it did not happen immediately, because the results had to be waited for. However, thanks to the support of France, Great Britain and Russia in 1830, Greece finally won its independence.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in today's speech referred to the war in Ukraine: " This year we welcome our national anniversary with the only certainty that is the uncertainty of war. The fire that has reignited in Europe paints the borders with blood and turns millions of people into refugees. The universal ideas of the [Greek uprising in 1821] cross borders and centuries. The passion of freedom at that time became a solidarity for the defenders of today's Ukraine . "
