The Greek Ministry of Culture recently announced that popular musical instruments such as bouzouki, tzouras, baglama and zeibekiko have been entered on the Greek National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Zeibekiko is one of the most characteristic Greek dances, formerly performed only by men, today it is also performed by women. If you see it once, it will surely distinguish it from other Greek dances. The performed figures and electrifying music make it impossible to forget. The dance itself is meant to express the unity of spirit and body. There are no strictly defined steps here, but there are figures that allow you to express your emotions and lose yourself in music. Usually one person dances and the others line up or kneel on one knee and clap to the rhythm of the music. Disrupting this dance is perceived as disrespecting the dancer.
Currently, zeibekiko is also present at weddings, it is also often part of a dance show. If you haven't seen this dance yet, make sure to watch the videos we've linked.
Zeibekiko, bouzouki and other instruments are identified with Greece and its tradition and play a leading role in Greek folk music. These instruments, especially the bouzouki, are recognizable abroad.
