117 years since the Cretan Revolution in Therisso

On March 10, 1905, the Cretan Revolution, later known as the Therisso Revolution, broke out in the village of Therisso in the western part of the island. Its leader was Eleftherios Venizelos, who later became an eight-time prime minister of Greece. Once again taking up arms, the Cretans wanted this time to bring about the unification of Crete with Greece. Today it will be 117 years since the revolution began, and this Saturday, a special celebration will be organized in the village of Therisso.

When the Turkish army left the island in 1898, a substitute for a parliament was created with Christian and Muslim deputies, and the function of High Commissioner of Crete was entrusted to the Greek prince George.

The authoritarian politics of Prince George, who also led the government, was not recognized by a large part of the Cretan community. Although Venizelos initially served as the minister of justice in the government of Prince George, the conflicting aspirations of both politicians led to the fact that their paths quickly diverged. The monarchist and royalist prince George strove to introduce absolute rule and make Crete an independent kingdom, but under his scepter. Venizelos, as an enemy of the Greek monarchy, was going to introduce a republic. So he headed a strong opposition that gathered around him. Its representatives demanded, first of all, the union of Crete with Greece. On February 26, 1905, they went one step further as they drafted and signed a proclamation calling for an amendment to the Constitution.

On March 20, 1905, Jerzy's parliamentary elections were to take place. However, the opposition called on people to abstain in order to express their opposition to the prince's actions. And the rebellious politicians gathered in the village of Therisso, where the Greek flag was raised.

About 1,000 revolutionaries initially participated in the Therisso uprising, but others joined them fairly quickly. Expressions of support were pouring in from all over the world. Prince George, openly supported by Russia, was not at all seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict. On the contrary, he wanted to end the matter quickly and brutally, because the actions of the nationalist movement began to take the form of a civil war. Attempts were made to suppress the uprising by the Cretan Gendarmerie created by the prince. Fortunately, however, he could not count on her unconditional devotion, which definitely weakened the position of the prince. This is one of the reasons why the fights between the two sides that took place near Chania did not end with a large number of victims. Venizelos persisted, however, and the final end of the fighting and preliminary agreement was made on November 15.

In the following year, despite gaining a slight advantage in the elections over Venizelos' party, Prince George was unable to calm the situation, and disputes increasingly divided society. It was only as a result of British diplomacy that Prince George was dismissed from the post of High Commissioner. His place was taken by the former Greek prime minister, Alexandros Zaimis, who was much more sympathetic to Venizelos' aspirations. As a result, after 2 years, Venizelos led to the reunification of Crete with Greece and the creation of a new Constitution.

W Jeorjopouli montowali parasole kilka dni temu. No jestem ciekawa czy teraz będą demontować.
To znaczy, że z Falasarny znikną baldachimy do leżenia? Trochę rewolucja.
