For the first time in Crete, this sports event was organized in 2014 by a group of skiing enthusiasts, who wanted to promote the unknown ski mountaineering potential of Crete. The next edition of Pierre Creta took place in 2015, and later turned into a cyclical event organized every two years. Its subsequent editions took place in 2017 and 2019. The Cretan Pierre Creta enjoys unflagging interest with each subsequent year. In 2019, over 200 participants from 10 countries took part in it. In 2021, however, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year, however, the tradition of organizing these original competitions for Crete has been resumed. As all participants emphasize, the event is accompanied by an unforgettable atmosphere, and after the races, participants have fun in the nearby town of Anogia.

This event, as its organizers admit, is inspired by the Pierre Menta mountain skiing competition, which has been held in the French Alps since 1986. Despite its great potential, Crete is still associated with summer holidays, beaches and warm sea. And yet on the island there are three mountain ranges, which in winter are covered with a layer of snow, creating very good conditions for skiing on the mountain slopes. Currently, local authorities are increasingly raising the topic of creating conditions for winter tourism in order to attract tourists who practice winter sports to Crete.
This event is supported by the Region of Crete, the Mylopotamos and Anogia Municipalities and the Psiloritis Geopark.
