Today, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during a telephone conversation with Włodymyr Zeleski, reassured Greece's full support for Ukraine and declared aid. The Greek Ministry of Health is already sending medical supplies to Ukraine. Mitsotakis also emphasized that Greece had been in favor of introducing tougher sanctions against Russia from the outset.

Greek immigrants died during the bombing

According to today's media, several Greek emigrants living north of Mariupol were killed during the bombing in Ukraine. War and the tourist season

The war triggered by Russia certainly changes the outlook for the upcoming tourist season a lot. Until recently, we wrote that this year will allow us to make up for the losses caused by the pandemic. Unfortunately, the consequences of these first days of Russian aggression have already been noticed by tourist agencies. Before the start of the war, it was expected that about 100,000 people would come to Crete this year. tourists from Ukraine and 200-250 thousand. tourists from Russia. Unfortunately, due to the conflict, these numbers will definitely change significantly, which will be severely felt by companies from the tourism industry in Crete, which are already talking about "freezing" in the influx of new bookings.

Customers from both Ukraine and Russia are recognized in Crete as good tourists willing to leave their money in shops and restaurants, choosing four- and five-star hotels and going on excursions. If they are missing, a large part of the industry will certainly feel it. Even if hostilities come to an end soon, the sanctions imposed on Russia may limit the mobility of its citizens for longer.

Additionally, it must be remembered that tourism is very sensitive to external factors. Political instability and the war atmosphere can effectively "put" another tourist season off, because many Europeans will cancel their holiday trips.

Prices up

The change in the tourist market is not the only consequence for Crete and Greece. An additional concern is the soaring prices of energy, fuel and basic commodities such as bread and pasta. Both Ukraine and Russia are among the largest exporters of grains, corn and sunflower oil. About 30% of Ukrainian agricultural products go to the EU, and the pace of grain exports continued to increase. However, the war also changes this market, the prices of contracts for the supply of corn and wheat have already increased significantly. In the near future, this will certainly translate into increased costs of living, which will be felt by all consumers. Higher prices in shops and bills, and a drop in incomes in the average household in Europe may change the holiday plans of some tourists from other countries.

Unfortunately, all the confusion that has emerged in recent days is the result of the insane policies of only one country, and in fact the result of the decisions of its leader. What is happening in Ukraine today has no reasonable justification, and any translations indicated by the Russian side are open mockery and an attempt to make "idiots" out of broadly understood international public opinion. We are wholeheartedly with the citizens of Ukraine fighting for their right to self-determination. The difficult history that divides our countries in the face of the present should not and cannot affect the perception of Russian aggression.
