Today a few more words about the consequences that Elpida left behind. This frosty and exceptionally snowy than weather for almost a week put the inhabitants of Greece to the winter test.
Communication difficulties caused by the snowy and frosty weather on a regular basis are just one of the many inconveniences. Now, however, it is time to count the tangible losses caused by this hopeless weather (that's a play on words, because Elpida means Hope in Greek).

In Crete, one of the affected groups is livestock owners. On the Lassithi Plateau, some of them are still unable to reach their herds. In the higher regions there is an over 3-meter layer of snow, which prevents it from entering the farms and providing the animals with new portions of water and food. This means that some of them may not survive this situation.
Breeders who have kept their animals at lower elevations also count losses. Low temperatures have killed some of their animals, and the greatest losses are related to newborn lambs. The current preliminary estimate puts livestock losses in Crete at 10-20%. We will only know the final numbers after collecting detailed data from breeders.
The second group that also suffered heavy losses are the owners of olive trees. Growers who have olive groves above 300 meters above sea level have the biggest problem. Those who have not yet harvested olives from the trees, unfortunately will not do it anymore. The fruit that was still on the trees has been frozen, so they should be written off. Moreover, a large part of the trees was seriously damaged by snow and frost. Of the trees that have not yet been pruned after harvest, as much as 90% are damaged. This will have the long-term consequences of producing less olives, and therefore less oil, over the next few seasons.
