A large part of Greece is struggling with the winter aura that the Elpida weather front brought a few days ago. Information about road difficulties or power cuts is constantly coming from many places. Yesterday, hundreds of cars were stuck on the Attiki Odos highway several kilometers from Athens for many hours. Many people abandoned their cars on the road, but a large proportion remained in their cars. Finally, the army was directed to take control of the situation and help the imprisoned, which eventually evacuated 3,500 people after 26 hours. Five people were hospitalized with symptoms of hypothermia.

Due to these difficult weather conditions in parts of Greece, today is declared a public holiday. However, the prolonged snowfall meant that also tomorrow, in some regions such as Attica, Crete, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, the inhabitants of Greece will be able to stay at their homes. This decision concerns both the public and private sectors. Only grocery stores that are to remain open only between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. are excluded. Pharmacies and petrol stations on duty are also to be opened. There are also closed schools, kindergartens and nurseries in these areas. Due to the inability to provide technical support, e-learning classes will not be conducted.
Crete, like most of Greece, is struggling with the effects of intense snowfall. Inhabitants of higher elevated villages, such as Anogia, this morning saw about half a meter of snow outside their windows. Elpida brought snowfall not only in the higher parts of the island, but also at low altitudes. Initial forecasts assumed that the snow would stop today, but the latest forecasts say that it will continue to rain intermittently until tomorrow morning. In some areas, such as Lassithi, it will continue to snow until afternoon.

In all the prefectures in Crete, there are problems with car traffic. Some roads are still closed or snow chains are required. There are also situations where after clearing snow, the road is opened, and then after a few hours it becomes impassable again. To minimize road problems, regional authorities continue to call for travel restrictions only in exceptional circumstances.
