At the end of this year's September, there was a strong earthquake in the area of Arkalochori in Crete. In a number of localities, some buildings were destroyed or seriously damaged. However, these were not the only consequences of these shocks. For safety reasons, right after the occurrence of this element, a decision was made to close the Dikte Cave on the Lassithi Plateau. This place remained inaccessible to visitors until yesterday.
On Monday, the secretariat of the mayor of Lassithi municipality received a letter in which the Greek Ministry of Culture informed that the Dikti cave could be re-opened to visitors. This decision was preceded by a detailed study by geologists who confirmed that the September earthquake did not cause any damage. Scientists also concluded that it was absolutely possible to reopen the cave.
Giannis Stefanakis, the mayor of the Lassithi Commune, did not hide his satisfaction with this decision. Dikte Cave is one of the most important tourist attractions in this area of Crete, attracting thousands of tourists every year. Re-opening the cave was important because this place is one of the important elements of the local economy. Closing the cave to visitors was a serious economic blow to local family businesses.
