While wandering around Chania, you may have stumbled upon the iconic Hand Monument at the back of the Firkas Fortress in Talos Square. It was placed in memory of the victims of one of the greatest catastrophes that took place in Greek shipping. 55 years ago , bad weather, haste and neglect led to the dramatic sinking of the SS Heraklion ferry. Today, on the anniversary of this catastrophe, we are recalling the backstage of this story.
