Today, the Greeks celebrate one of their most important national holidays: No (Oxi) Day . On this occasion, parades were organized in some cities, the F-16 from the Zeus Air Force Group and the historic Spitfire plane also flew over the Greek sky over Thessaloniki.
It was dawn on October 28, 1940, when the government of Benito Mussolini demanded permission from the Greek government that the Italian army could freely cross the Greco-Albanian border, which consequently meant giving up control of Greek airports, ports and other strategic places.
The ultimatum was handed over to the then Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas. For this purpose, the Italian ambassador to Athens, Emanuele Grazzi, just before 3 a.m., directly from the banquet at the German embassy, went to the house of Metaxas, then handed the prime minister an ultimatum containing a list of demands.
Grazzi himself describes it in his memoirs as follows:
"I have an order, Prime Minister, to notify you. I handed him the document. Metaxas began to read it. Through his glasses I could see his eyes watering. When he finished, he looked me in the face and in a sad but calm voice said to me:" Alors, c'est la guerre "(Well, we have a war.) I replied that it could be avoided. He replied NO .
That morning, Metaxas delivered a message to the Greek people about the accession of Greece to World War II. And at 5 a.m. General Visconti Praska gave the order to attack the Greek positions. The famous NO that Metaxas said after a few days became a symbol of Greek resistance to Italian aggression.
