The end of June is a good time for the first summary and reflection on the ongoing tourist season in 2021 in Crete. This season was officially launched on May 15, although unofficially already a dozen or so days earlier, larger numbers of individual tourists reached Crete. As predicted earlier, May and June did not turn out to be spectacular when it comes to the interest of tourists.
Compared to the 2019 results, in Crete the average reduction in tourist traffic in May was 85%, and in June 70%. Compared to 2020, this year's statistics for the same period of the year are relatively better. However, it should be remembered that in May and June last year the hotels remained closed, and the official opening of Greece to tourism did not take place until July 1. The current increases are therefore a somewhat Pyrrhic victory. Hospitality industry officials describe the situation today, almost a month and a half after the tourism industry opened up, as "foggy and unexplored."
In the Rethymno Prefecture area, only 40-50% of the hotel facilities have resumed operation so far. The hotels that have opened here and receive guests have an average occupancy rate of less than 30%. This represents just 20% of the occupancy recorded in May 2019 and 35% of the occupied seats in June of the last normal season. Reservations have so far been made very slowly, and ultimately it is still uncertain whether they turn into actual arrivals. It was only at the end of June that entrepreneurs from the tourism industry noticed an increase in bookings for the second decade of July.
So what is the reason for such low results? Probably some people will blame the strict rules of welcoming guests by Greeks, which is probably one of the reasons, but it turns out to be less important. The real reasons are on the other side. It must be remembered that the governments of other countries are looking at the persistently weak epidemic results of Greece.
Great Britain, which is a very important Greek market, in 2019 "provided" as many as 3.5 million tourists, who left almost 2.5 billion euros in this country. According to data published by the Bank of Greece, even last year, which is considered bad, about a million Britons spent their holidays in Greece, who left € 749 million here. Some areas of Greece are even dependent on the holiday decisions of British citizens.
Currently, however, the British government has put Greece on the "orange" list, which for UK residents means that going on a Greek holiday after returning ends with quarantine. As a result of this decision, the islands such as Crete, Rhodes, Zakynthos, Corfu and Kos will suffer the most, as they are the most heavily geared towards UK tourists. Due to uncertainty, TUI Britain has canceled holiday packages in various destinations, including Greece. Perhaps Greece will get the green light after July 19.
The first charter flights from Russia took off only on June 20, and the first air connections from the Scandinavian countries will not be launched until the beginning of July. However, the increasing number of cases of the new strain of the virus in Russia will most likely lead to stricter sanitary rules for visitors from this country.
The president of the Association of Tourism Organizers in Rethymno predicts that hotel occupancy in July will drop even further, and in August you can expect last minute bookings, i.e. decisions made shortly before the trip. According to him, it will be influenced by the lifting of restrictions and bans on traveling from Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries. At the moment, however, high hotel occupancy is expected in September and October. Of course, unless there is a sharp deterioration in the epidemic by then.
Unfortunately, country leaders are increasingly concerned about the spread of the Indian variant of the coronavirus, which may significantly thwart the plans of both vacationers and the tourism sector in entire regions of Europe. An example is the recent decision by Germany to add Portugal to the list of regions where the variety Delta is found. As a consequence, German tourists who have not yet left Portugal in a hurry, from today will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine after returning to the country, which cannot be shortened by taking a test. An additional difficulty is that this quarantine also covers convalescents and vaccinated people.
If the dark scenarios for the fourth wave of covida, which is forecast to occur this autumn, come true, unfortunately the initial target of this year's revenues for Greece will become unattainable. Obtaining revenues at the level of 50% of those achieved in 2019 will be simply impossible.
A blow to Greek tourism is also the suspension of the operations of the Greek company Mouzenidis Group, which manages a large part of the tourist traffic from Russia and other Eastern European countries. A few days ago, one of the largest travel agencies operating in Greece announced the discontinuation of customer service. To date, Mouzenidis has brought around 700,000 tourists a year to Greece, mainly from Russia. In a statement issued by this tour operator, it was announced that the company lost financial liquidity. The closure of the markets it serves due to a pandemic in 2020 resulted in a 95% decrease in turnover. Fortunately, other companies of this group operating in other countries, including Poland, operate normally.
The difficult and dynamically changing season, determined mainly by the course of the coronavirus pandemic, awaits not only Greece, but also other tourist countries. The decisions of the major markets are unknown, as are the future conditions under which the tourism industry will operate. Hence the efforts of the Greeks to make their country a safe and covid-free place. Staying on the green list of safe countries is crucial. As a result, the governments of countries do not add additional "attractions" to their citizens returning from leisure in such safe countries, on the other hand, most foreign travelers choose countries with low disease rates as their destinations.

Na pewno nie widać tych pustek na plażach Elafonisi czy Balos. Wczoraj mimo, że poniedziałek na Elafonisi o godzinie 10 sznurek samochodów, autokarów, większość leżaków już była zajęta. Dużo ludzi :)

To miejsca które zawsze przyciągają tłumy, więc latem na Elafonisi zawsze jest sporo ludzi. Dla porównania na zdjęciu fragment tego co się działo w 2019 na tej plaży.

Ceny wakacji z polskimi biurami podróży absolutnie nie zachęcają do wyjazdu. Wakacje dla czteroosobowej rodziny to kwota pięciocyfrowa. Biorąc pod uwagę, że ogromna część turystów decyduje się na zorganizowane wakacje to tour operatorzy nie grają do bramki Greków.

Szczerze mówiąc to patrząc na prognozę pogody mogę tylko podziwiać tych którzy wybierają się w lipcu czy sierpniu na Kretę - na najbliższy tydzień prognoza w Chanii nie spada poniżej 35, a dochodzi do 40. W takich warunkach ja bym był zdolny tylko zalegać pod klimatyzatorem z drinkiem z palemką. Byliśmy wielokrotnie na Krecie ale nigdy po 10 czerwca i przed 25 sierpnia, w tym roku - na początku maja, drugim samolotem jaki poleciał z Polski na Kretę. Gdybym musiał z jakiegoś powodu jechać w lipcu, wybrałbym jednak mniej gorący kierunek - np Wyspy Kanaryjskie gdzie prognozy na najbliższy tydzień pokazują 23 -26 stopni. I przez całe lato jest podobnie. A na Kretę - wrzesień i październik.

Kreta skradła Nasze serca. Z taką życzliwością i gościnnością dawno się nie spotkaliśmy. Co prawda pod koniec sierpnia lecimy na Korfu, to jednak udało się znaleźć tanie loty i od wtorku do soboty jesteśmy na Krecie

Stalida w 2. poł. sierpnia, wiał meltemi, codziennie słynne kreteńskie 29 stopni latem (pamiętam je z katalogów Scan Holiday jeszcze), gdy cała Grecja ma min. 30 :)
Hotelik przy plaży, nie trzeba było włączać klimy. Stąd wyspy greckie i kanaryjskie to zasadniczo moje ulubione kierunki. Hotel mi się nie otworzył w czerwcu na Krecie, musiałem zmienić plany, w lastach na Grecję nic mi nie odpowiadało i było drogo, byłem na wyspie włoskiej, też ładnie.
