A few days ago we recalled the
80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete , which was the beginning of the German occupation of the island. After several days of fierce fighting, on May 26-28, 1941, the German troops defeated the defenders of Chania and Souda and took both these cities. In the initial battles, the Cretans were supported by the Allies, who, after the lost battle, conquered the mountains, and got to the vicinity of the town of Chora Sfakion on the southern coast of Crete. It was from here that on May 28-June 1, the soldiers were evacuated by sea to Egypt. In this way, more than 11,000 Allies left the island. Heraklion and Rethymno resisted the Germans for the longest time. However, British troops defending the capital of Crete were also evacuated on the night of May 28-29, without the Greek forces being informed.
