Yesterday we informed you that the day after the Orthodox Easter, which falls this year on May 2, gastronomic establishments in Greece will be opened. Initially, only the gardens will be open, and the staff is to follow a strict sanitary regime. Mandatory self-tests for employees of gastronomic establishments are to be additional security measures. Also from May 3, the curfew will be shortened, which will apply from 23.00 to 5.00. These are not the only changes that will take place in May, but before that, the Greeks will face tighter security measures in connection with the upcoming Easter holidays.
From today, the police are to carry out more thorough road checks to limit travel before Christmas. Movement between prefectures has been prohibited for a long time. You are only allowed to travel for business or medical reasons. There will also be a necessity to travel to funerals and in the event of visiting rights when the family is divorced.
Stricter controls and severe penalties are to discourage those who would still like to bypass the bans and go to their homeland for the holidays. Travelers who do not provide the appropriate travel documentation will be turned back and will be fined an additional € 300. If someone uses the forged documentation, the financial penalty will be even higher: 500 €.
During the pre-Christmas week, there is also a ban on movement between 10.00 p.m. and 5.00 a.m., and on Easter Sunday from 9.00 p.m. to 5.00 a.m.
A number of restrictions were also imposed on the functioning of churches at that time. This is the most important holiday for the Greeks, but for the second year in a row they will have to spend it completely differently than they are used to. In addition to the prohibition of movement, guidelines were also issued regarding the number of family meetings. According to the rules, only members of two families will be able to meet at the festive table, with no more than 9 people in the room and 12 people when the Easter dinner will be organized outdoors. These are strict rules for Greeks who are used to very family holidays spent in large numbers.
After Easter, there is to be a slow return to normal functioning. In addition to the opening of gastronomy, as we mentioned at the beginning, 10 primary and middle schools are to be opened. However, both teachers and students will need to self-test for Covid-19.
On May 15, Greece is also opening up to all foreign travelers. However, when entering its territory, you will need either a vaccination certificate or a negative result of the PCR test carried out no later than 72 hours before arrival. Even though it is quite a symbolic date, nobody expects a great tourist boom on this day. As the president of Hoteliers Fegeracja estimates, most hotels in Greece will be open in the second half of June, when the number of bookings will increase.
Also on May 15, the ban on travel outside the region of residence for Greek citizens is to be lifted. On this day, you can also expect the first different cultural events.
