A very good year for Cretan exports

In recent days, the Greek Statistical Office and the Association of Exporters of Crete announced the export results recorded by Cretan companies last year. As it turns out, despite the pandemic, last year for local companies sending their products abroad was the best in five years. Although it was not possible to achieve the same results as in the record year 2015, when goods worth 486 million euros were sold, nevertheless in 2020 for the first time there was an increase and a significant increase! Additionally, it should be noted that the increase in exports of goods from Crete was higher than the corresponding rate for total Greek exports, which was only 3%.

So let's get down to business. In 2020, Cretan entrepreneurs jointly exported 420,925 tons of goods with a total value of EUR 463.2 million. Comparing these data to the results obtained in 2019, it turns out that there was a 13.8% increase in value and a 9.2% increase in quantity.

However, as pointed out by the Association of Exporters of Crete, these figures do not include export data for a specific category of products. The list does not include the sale of petroleum products and goods belonging to the category "Ships, ferries, etc." for which the amount of exported goods increased by 31.2%, and the value alone amounted to EUR 534 million.

The aggregate export data obtained by enterprises operating in Crete puts the island at the forefront of the most dynamic regions of Greece in this respect. It is worth noting here that Cretan exporters managed to achieve such high sales results despite various restrictions and difficulties caused by the pandemic. This is undoubtedly an important factor constituting a kind of success of the local economy, especially in the era of very depleted revenues currently obtained by the tourism industry.

What do they buy abroad?

The food and drink sector is the most important commodity sold to foreign contractors. This branch is responsible for 52.4% of total exports of goods from Crete. Its total value last year amounted to EUR 242.5 million and showed an increase of 16.6%.

In second place is the chemicals and plastics sector, with a share of approximately 28.2% in total Crete exports and an increase of 8.4%. The following sectors are occupied by the sectors of agricultural equipment (with a share of 6.1% and an increase by 17.4%), and textiles and clothing (5.7% and an increase by 23.8%). The sectors of machinery and equipment, building materials and other industrial products have lower values.

Cretan gold

In the agri-food sector, the largest share is exported by Cretan gold, i.e. oil. Last year, sales of olive oil were higher by 24.2% and amounted to 147.5 million euros. A 20% increase was also recorded for fruit exports (EUR 22.3 million), in the case of vegetables the increase was 2.8%, but the total amount was much higher than in the case of fruit exports: 47.8 million. A smaller share in total exports was taken by fish and seafood, water and juices, dairy products, honey, wine as well as meat and its products.

Perhaps one of the reasons for the surge in exports, especially of food products, was precisely the pandemic year and travel restrictions. Food is one of the most popular holiday "souvenirs" that tourists bring from their Greek holidays. Since some people could not go on a traditional holiday, they probably looked for their favorite Greek products in online stores that import goods from Crete. A large number of Cretan oilers cannot imagine using any other oil than the Cretan one, and its stocks run out so quickly.

Main Markets

The main recipients of Cretan products are mainly Germany (20.3%) and Italians (17%). France (6.1%), the Netherlands (5.7%) and Poland (4.3%) have a smaller but still significant share in the purchase of Cretan products. The remaining countries in the top ten are the United States, Great Britain, Cyprus, Spain and Austria.

In the case of the Food and Beverages sector, the main recipients of Cretan products are ... Italy, which last year purchased Cretan food and drink for EUR 66.1 million. Cretan olive oil has been of particular interest in this country for many years. Crete food and drink products are also popular in Germany, which last year spent 65 million euros on these goods.

Cretan food products are also popular in the USA (EUR 12.2 million), Austria (EUR 12 million) and Great Britain (EUR 9.1 million).

W Jeorjopouli montowali parasole kilka dni temu. No jestem ciekawa czy teraz będą demontować.
Απάτητες παραλίες) ;)
To znaczy, że z Falasarny znikną baldachimy do leżenia? Trochę rewolucja.
