Although it is difficult to find the positive aspects of restrictions introduced during a pandemic, as recent statistics show, there is one area of life that has definitely changed in Greece to a plus. As shown by the latest data, during the pandemic there was a significant increase in demand for fresh fruit and vegetables, which in stores even reached values higher by 35-40% than before the pandemic.

Other healthier food products, as well as those produced in an ecological way, also sell much better. The demand for organically produced meat also increased by 8%, which is a large percentage in this sector. At the same time, market representatives are convinced that this trend will be consolidated in the minds of the Greeks, and the interest in healthy eating will continue after the pandemic, reaching further growth trends. The increased demand for these products also translated into an increase in jobs in this sector by approximately 10%.
Some people probably want to say that this information is nonsense because the Greeks have the healthiest cuisine and eat a lot of vegetables and fruits. Well, such beliefs about the Greek diet have not had much to do with reality lately, especially in the case of residents of larger cities.
Already in 2019, we wrote that in recent years many Greek residents have changed their eating habits and behavior. ELSTAT's statistical research left no illusions at the time. They showed that the Greeks eat less vegetables and fruit not only compared to other Mediterranean countries, but even less than the European average at that time. And in addition to changing eating habits, recent decades have also brought a change in the way of life and a significant reduction in activity, which directly contributed to the deterioration of the health of the Greeks and the development of childhood obesity and its side effects.
So it seems that in this context, more frequent shopping in local greengrocers and eating vegetables and fruit can only do good for the people of Greece. Discontinuing processed foods and switching to a more natural diet is conducive to building stronger immunity and a healthier lifestyle.
