The restrictions related to the fall lockdown in Greece were initially intended to apply until November 30 . Yesterday, however, information was released that all restrictions are initially extended until December 7. It is not known yet what decisions will be made after that date. Currently, in Greece, the increase in new confirmed COVID-19 cases has stabilized at around 2,000 people a day. In the second decade of November, however, over 3,000 cases were recorded daily there.
As emphasized by Nikos Hardalias, Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, the epidemiological burden remains high. Out of 74 regions in Greece, 18 are particularly dire. Hardalias also said that the present moment is premature to talk about what restrictions will apply during the coming holidays. It is known, however, that this year's Christmas will certainly be different than before.
In the case of Crete, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases currently fluctuates around 30-40 people a day (today 45), i.e. almost twice as many patients are registered every day as during the entire spring lockdown. The harvest of olives in the autumn months probably contributed to the increase in the disease.
The Greek government has also started preparations for a vaccination program. According to the plans of the Ministry, citizens will receive SMSs with the proposed date and time of vaccination. A special internet platform for booking a vaccine-related visit is also to be created. First of all, people from the so-called vulnerable groups are to be selected for vaccination. One of the criteria will be the age of the person.
Of course, it doesn't take a philosopher to know that 2020 will end with a significant drop in tourism income. Greece, as a primarily holiday country, was particularly hard hit by travel restrictions. According to the Bank of Greece, these incomes fell by 78.2% in the first nine months and arrivals by 77.2%. The largest airline Aegean Airlines has also been hit hard . In the second quarter of this year alone, this popular and respected carrier reported a loss of EUR 73.4 million. Currently, the Greek government plans to support Aegean Airlines with EUR 120 million.
