Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today the decision to introduce another general lockdown across Greece. Lockdown will apply from this Saturday, November 7 from 6 a.m. for the next three weeks until November 30. Unfortunately, despite the previously introduced various security measures, the number of cases in Greece has been growing rapidly for many days. Also in Crete, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has started to increase alarmingly in recent days.
Special rules will be imposed during the lockdown in Greece. In addition to the mandatory use of the mask in all rooms and outdoors in public spaces, movement restrictions are introduced. From 05:00 to 21:00, Greek citizens will only be allowed to leave their homes in strictly limited circumstances. Before each departure, residents of Greece will be required to send text messages with the appropriate code for the reason they leave home. Such a solution was introduced already during the spring lockdown.
It will be allowed to go out only for health reasons (visit to a doctor, pharmacy, health center), to a basic supply store (supermarket, pharmacy, pet stores, gas stations), and to go to the bank if it is not possible to settle the matter via the Internet. Other situations provided for by the government include going to work (based on a certificate from the employer), taking children to school, and participating in celebrations (funeral, baptism, wedding). It will also be possible to go out with the dog (or other pet) and exercise outdoors, but in this situation a maximum of two people can leave one household. They will also have to keep a distance of 1.5 meters between them.
An additional restriction on movement will apply from 21:00 to 05:00. Leaving the house will be possible only in three cases: to work (on the basis of a certificate from the employer), health reasons and going out with the dog. In these cases, there is also a requirement to send a text message.
There is also a ban on traveling outside the prefecture of residence, travel is allowed only for business and health reasons.
Additionally, museums, archaeological sites, gyms, markets and night clubs are closed. Film screenings, beauty and hairdressing services will not be available. Mandatory teleworking for 50% of the staff is introduced. Restrictions on the number of seats in public transport still apply. Primary schools will be open, while other schools and universities are required to conduct remote education.
Mitsotakis also announced financial aid for citizens in financial difficulties: an extension of unemployment benefits for two months, and 800 euros of unemployment benefit for people suspended due to company closures. The long-term unemployed will also receive additional financial assistance.
Mitsotakis added that the decision on the second blockade was made due to a significant increase in the number of hospitalizations of people suffering from COVID-19, a sharp increase in the number of intubated people and the number of patients staying in intensive care units. At present, more people are admitted to hospitals each day than they leave them. Currently, more than 20,000 tests are performed daily, of which the number of positive tests exceeds 9%, which means that the epidemic is serious. As the Prime Minister emphasizes, the restrictive measures introduced by Greece are intended to prevent such a situation, which is currently observed in many European countries, including Belgium.
The Prime Minister additionally emphasized the importance of practicing outdoor sports. In the event of the autumn lockdown, the Greek authorities are to show greater tolerance in this regard, as long as it is not a team sport. And for those who question the existence of the virus and the existence of the pandemic, Prime Minister Mitsotakis suggested a walk to the hospital.
