Among all the places worth visiting in Crete, one can distinguish the constant leaders of those that invariably appear at the top of the popularity list every season. For western Crete, it will certainly be beaches such as Elafonisi or the Balos lagoon. In the central part of the island, the island of Spinalonga is very popular, as we wrote about recently. The excavations of the Palace of Knossos are also eagerly visited. Going further east of Crete, the island of Chrissi cannot be overlooked. Cruises to this small piece of land are very popular among tourists vacationing in the vicinity of Ierapetra. What makes this island unique is the cedar forest that covers it, as well as very picturesque beaches covered with golden sand, according to the name of the island (χρυση - gold). Today we would like to share with you a short film made on this island by Giannis Psaroudakis.
At the end, however, we would like to mention that such great popularity among tourists carries a huge burden on the local natural environment. For a long time, scientists have been alarming that due to the large number of people moving around Chrissi, the cedar forest covering the island is endangered.
