Spinalonga is the second most popular tourist attraction in Crete. Only the Minoan Palace in Knossos attracts more tourists during the season. However, this exceptionally different year caused the roles to be reversed in this respect. According to data from the Tax Office in the Lassithi area, the recorded number of visits to the former lepers' island exceeded the number of visits to Knossos in 2020.
Of course, the visitor numbers are much lower than during any "normal" tourist season. In July and August this year, Spinalonga was visited by some 40,000 visitors, up from 142,600 visitors last summer. Nevertheless, this year's palm went to Spinalonga.
There are many indications that the small number of tourists in Crete caused by the pandemic, and hence the small amount of work, made it possible for many Greeks, especially Cretans, to visit the lepers' island for the first time. For some of you it is probably surprising that someone who lives in Crete does not know its monuments and attractions, but we assure you that this is not a rare situation. People employed in tourism or services rarely have time for such pleasures.
