Direct contribution of tourism to the Greek economy in 2019

The 2019 tourist season was special for Greece in many ways. The local tourism industry at that time achieved the best results that have ever been recorded. Record values were achieved in practically every respect. The fact that repeating this result during this season will be very difficult was already known during last year's autumn. Even then, the first information about a decline in the number of early bookings and a smaller number of hotel rooms booked by travel agencies appeared. However, no one expected at the time that the Greek tourism industry would have to deal with a serious and global problem of the coronavirus pandemic.

Global declines

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates that the decline in revenues of companies operating in the tourism sector in 2020 may amount to 60 to 80% compared to 2019 . Unfortunately, it will be no different in the case of companies operating in this industry in Greece. However, UNWTO officials emphasize that, in the long term, tourism is an activity that is quickly recovering from recession and has seen steady growth over the past decades.

At the moment, only the first data published by the Bank of Greece ( Bank of Greece , Τράπεζα της Ελλάδας ) for the period from January to July 2020 have appeared. According to preliminary estimates, the Greek tourism industry recorded only € 1.25 billion in revenues at that time. We are just writing, because in the same period last year, the value of inflows amounted to € 9.1 billion. This means that during the first 7 months of this year, the revenues of Greek tourism decreased by over 86% . Obviously, such a reduced number of revenues results directly from the decrease in the number of visitors. In total, from January to July, Greece was visited by about 80% fewer tourists compared to the same period last year.

Record year 2019

Finally, it is worth mentioning a few facts that were published in the latest INSETE report summarizing last year's record tourist season in Greece. One of the more impressive aspects is that the historically highest employment in the catering and hospitality industry was recorded in the third quarter. In total, the enterprises operating in these sectors of the economy employed nearly 430 thousand people. people. The rest of the data related to the Greek tourism industry last year is as follows:

• the direct contribution of the tourism industry to Greek GDP was around € 2.3 billion (for comparison, the total Greek GDP growth last year was € 2.7 billion)
• Greek tourism revenues accounted for around 78% of the value of all exported goods. Greek tourism offset about 89% of the commodity deficit
• at the peak of the holiday season, approximately 17% of employees were employed in enterprises operating directly in the tourism industry. Including companies operating indirectly in tourism, this indicator was even higher and amounted to 37 to 45%, depending on the estimates.
• people employed in the catering and hotel industry accounted for as much as 10% of all employees in Greece. In 2010, this value was 7.7%. At the same time, it is worth noting that in relation to other EU countries in Greece there is a much lower percentage of people who work part-time in these industries
• last year, the tourism industry's investment activity was around € 3.2 billion.

The above data, of course, concerned last year, we will not know data for 2020 in a few months. However, much worse indicators must be expected.
