More information on the conflict between Greece and Turkey

data_2020-07-22 20:10:35 2020-07-22 20:10:35

Following our news yesterday about the rising tensions between Greece and Turkey, many people are surely wondering what the rest of this story is. The most important news for now is that, at least temporarily, the escalation of actions taken yesterday by both countries has been stopped. According to unconfirmed reports, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, was involved in the mediation between the two parties. The US State Department also called on Turkey to refrain from taking any action.

Greek F-16

Let us recall that the conflict was fueled by yesterday's decision of the Turkish government, which announced that it was sending a research vessel to search for oil in the area of the Kastellorizo islet. This Greek island is located just 3 km from the south coast of Turkey. Both Ankara and Athens recognize the surrounding waters as their exclusive economic zone. Attempts to search for deposits in this place caused Greece to send its sea fleet to the sea to patrol the further activities of the Turkish side. Turkey's response was to send its ships to the Kastellorizo area. According to some websites, the armed conflict was hanging in the balance.

At the moment, the Greek fleet is still on alert in the Aegean Sea. While patrolling their territorial waters, sailors constantly monitor the movements of Turkish military ships, which, according to unconfirmed reports, remain in the area of the island of Kastellorizo. It is true that there was earlier information that Turkish ships returned to their ports, but in the end this was not confirmed by the Greek General Staff of National Defense.

At such moments, all gestures made by the conflicted parties become symbolic. A tweet posted by former Greek Defense Minister Panagiotis Kammenos caught attention. The minister published the icon of St. Nicholas, who is the patron of the Greek Navy. Even though the tweet did not contain any comment, it was received quite unambiguously.

The Greek central government has called on Turkey to halt its military activities and to further attempts to exploit the natural deposits in the Kastellorizo area. It is not yet known what position on this conflict will be taken by international organizations such as NATO or the United Nations, which, according to the Greek government, should mediate in this conflict. The Greek prime minister also believes that one of the actions taken within the EU may be the imposition of sanctions on Turkey. What is certain is that this war of nerves will continue for several more days. Ankara set the working time of the research vessel until August 2.

Tourism was the first victim of the conflict

Unfortunately, the tense situation in the border zone between Turkey and Greece has already suffered its first (fortunately not literally) victims. Military activities carried out by both sides caused anxiety among tourists vacationing on Greek islands. This was especially true of the island of Kastellorizo, which has become the site of frequent air force demonstrations in recent days.

Yesterday afternoon, particularly intensive activities were carried out for over two hours. Airplanes of both Greek and Turkish aviation repeatedly at low altitude flew in close proximity to the island of Kastellorizo. These peculiar military "games" were observed with increasing amazement and anxiety by tourists resting on the local beaches. However, the real panic was caused by the flight of one of the planes, which broke the sound barrier in close proximity to the island. The thunder caused by reaching this speed caused quite a stir and even chased tourists off the beaches.

Military operations conducted by both sides made some tourists doubt their safety. On Monday evening, travel agencies located on the island of Kastellorizo noted a great interest in purchasing tickets for the next ferry to Rhodes. In an interview with local media, the owners of local guesthouses and hotels complained that at the moment not only are they having a problem with tourists now leaving their facilities, but also that they are reporting a large number of canceled reservations.

Weronika, gazety lubią spekulacje w takich sytuacjach.

gość dodekanezowiec: Moim zdaniem - gdyby porównywać Grecję, Hiszpanię i południowe Włochy to: 1. W kategorii autentyczność: Włochy (np. Kalabria, Sycylia) - 9/10, Grecja - 8/10, Hiszpania - 3/10 2. W kategorii "frontem do potrzeb turysty": Hiszpania - 9/10, Grecja - 7 i pół/10, Włochy - 4/10.  Hiszpania to jakość hoteli, świetna infrastruktura, ale i taka "macdonaldyzacja turystyki" + blokowiska.
