New bicycle path in Paleochora

Paleochora located on the southern coast of Crete, is a place eagerly chosen by individual tourists. Its excellent location and good communication with surrounding attractions is valued especially by people focused on active leisure. Everything indicates that the ongoing works related to the modernization of the road connecting this town with Kountura ( Krios ) will be another advantage of Paleochora. As part of the renovation, a 4.5 km walkway and bicycle path will be constructed along the road. The authorities of the municipality of Kandanos-Selino declare that this is to be the longest bicycle route in Crete.

The walking and cycling path, which according to the project is to be 4m wide, will be made of special industrial concrete. Lighting is to complement this modern communication route, which also takes into account the needs of people with disabilities.

No less important is the modernization of the road itself, which, by the standards of the local area, is one of the busiest routes. In addition to passenger traffic, a fairly large number of trucks leaving the Krios area with large loads of fresh vegetables and fruit move here every day. According to Mr. Michalis Bikakis, mayor of the municipality of Kantanos-Selino, around 50% of horticultural production exported from the entire region of Chania comes from here. For this reason alone, it is important that the road there is characterized by high safety.

As part of the ongoing works related to the modernization of the road, necessary installations will be made to ensure the efficient removal of rainfall. Particular attention in this project was paid to improving safety around the point called " Ψηλός Βόλακας ", where residents have been struggling with rocks falling on the road for many years. As the mayor assures, this place is to be thoroughly cleaned of loose rocks. Along the edge of the road new barriers and nets will be installed to reduce the risk of such situations repeating in the future.

Personally, we hope that in the near future during the next visit we will be able to use the local bicycle path that allows access to the beach we particularly like Gialos.
