Yesterday, the Cretan portal flashnews.gr raised an important problem regarding the Samaria Gorge. Due to the virus, various health procedures have been developed for all public places in Greece. These include, among others, guidelines on the number of people who may be in a given space; maintaining safe distances, i.e. the so-called social distance; establishment of disinfection points, etc. Such rules have been developed and implemented for all public places such as shops, means of transport, restaurants, services, shops, museums and excavations, beaches, playgrounds, etc. However, it seems that all this has been forgotten about the set of procedures for Samaria. This seems unbelievable, but it is still true.
This is even more strange, because without an approved protocol it is not possible to open the gorge to visitors. In addition, if you make a trip to the gorge, you must also consider a return ferry trip from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion or Paleochora. Despite the fact that there are no foreign guests in Crete yet, tourists from Greece are already interested in entering the gorge. The portal pointed out that when in two weeks, planes start arriving at all domestic airports, the problem of the lack of such protocols will become serious. Samaria is one of the most visited places in Crete.
Luckily, MP Dora Bakoyannis responded to this article today and sent it to the Ministry of Health and other authorities for immediate action. As a result, such regulations were developed in the afternoon, and their approval at various levels of the official ladder still remains. Finally, they will be moved to the Chania forest district so that park employees can implement them as soon as possible and open the gorge. If we know more details about what the passage through Samaria will look like in the new "normality", we will share this knowledge with you :)
