New rules for maritime tourism and coastal shipping in Greece

The Greek Ministry of Shipping has developed guidelines for coastal navigation and sea tourism, which will apply from the next Monday, that is May 18 to June 15. However, it can be expected that some of these rules will also apply during the season. The planned procedures are aimed at protecting the health of passengers and ship crews, as well as the health of islanders. Further lifting of restrictions on means of transport will depend on the epidemic situation.

Ferries and international shipping

The following guidelines apply to traveling by passenger and passenger-car ferries and ships sailing in international waters under the flag of Greece.

The most significant restriction concerns the maximum number of passengers, which was set at 50% of the total number of passengers specified for each ship. If the ship has cabins, the number of passengers is set at 55%.

In addition to completing the special questionnaire, each passenger boarding will also have the temperature measured. A special health declaration will be required for Greco-Italian flights. It will be necessary to maintain 1.5 meter spacing between passengers when getting on and off the deck and in all areas of the ship.

Only one person will be embarked in each cabin. The exception is when the immediate family travels. In this case, a maximum of four passengers will be allowed in the cabin. In the case of disabled people, they can travel in a cabin with a guardian.

It will be compulsory for both passengers and ship crew to wear the mask.

On open decks passengers will be able to occupy every other seat.

Hygiene will be required and ships will have to set up antiseptic stations in different places. Crews will have to undergo special training, as they will be responsible for disinfecting ships and providing ventilation. In the event that suspicious symptoms appear during the voyage, isolation in designated areas and disembarkation in the nearest port prepared for managing sick persons will be ordered.

Also the functioning of passenger service points such as bars, restaurants and dining rooms will be subject to strict guidelines. Special instructional brochures will also be available on ships, and messages and information spots will be played.

Private boats and yachts

Slightly different guidelines have been developed for foreign private yachts and small recreational boats entering Greek ports and marinas.

This will include, inter alia, compliance with sanitary rules and obtaining consent for inflow, mandatory control of the health of crews and passengers in a certified laboratory (at the expense of passengers), implementation of WHO guidelines for long-term vessels mooring in ports, providing passengers with information on the provisions regarding COVID-19 applicable in individual ports. If you become ill among passengers or boat crew, you will need to isolate the patient on board in a designated place.
