Since yesterday, employees and entrepreneurs can move between the Greek islands after presenting the relevant documents. Today, however, it was announced that from May 18, employees of the tourism sector will also be able to go to the islands. Of course, also upon presentation of the applicable certificates from the employer. From this day, travel bans to mainland Greece will also be lifted.
Government plans also include information on the next steps regarding the lifting of travel bans. If everything goes well and the number of cases does not start to increase, it can be expected that from May 25 or June 1 all Greek citizens will be able to move between the islands and the continent. It would therefore be the third stage of gradual opening of the islands. However, as Deputy Minister of Civil Defense Nikos Hardalias said, although lifting the existing restrictions is smooth, the government wants to see the statistics of the disease before taking the next step.
An earlier date of introduction of free movement is more likely only for the continent and large islands such as Crete, Rhodes or Corfu, because these places have adequate medical infrastructure for the treatment of COVID-19.
