Today, around 4pm south of Crete, a relatively strong earthquake was recorded, whose strength was estimated at 6 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, due to the considerable distance separating the shocks from the coast of Crete, the local services do not report any damage to both the buildings and the infrastructure. According to the apparatus of the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of this earthquake was about 120 kilometers southeast of the town of Avri. It is worth noting that these shocks were also accompanied by the recession of the sea in the region of the coast and the appearance of small waves, which were hailed by local media as mini-tsunamis.
This phenomenon can be seen in the above and the following video, which was recorded in a small fishing port located in the city of Avri. According to the inhabitants of this village, the outflow and then the return of water were observed at least several times. Fortunately, the whole phenomenon was very quiet. The same behavior of the sea was also observed in the town of Kastri. Local residents mentioned that this phenomenon appeared in the past on the occasion of other strong earthquakes, e.g. in 2009.
The Geodynamic Institute also reported that during this earthquake several secondary shocks occurred, but even the strongest of them did not exceed 5 degrees on the Richter scale. Just in case, a local Fire Brigade was put on alert. Fortunately, their tasks were limited to patrolling and street monitoring. According to the words of Demosthenes Boudourakis, the commander of the local fire brigade, until now none of the residents reported the need for help or intervention.
