There is one more place on the map of Cretan attractions that should be included in your holiday plans. The Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete Botanical Garden, located between Fournes and Skordalou, is only 18 km from Chania. It is available to visit throughout the tourist season until the beginning of November.
Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete is 20 hectares of land overgrown by fruit trees from around the world, herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants. They form a specific microclimate in which it is worth spending 1-2 relaxing hours. In addition to local popular plants, you will also find unique samples of Cretan flora and fauna as well as tropical and subtropical species from around the world.
Properly marked paths will lead visitors to different parts of the garden: with tropical trees, fruit trees, citrus trees, herbs and vineyards. The landscape of the whole is complemented by a lake, which is inhabited by various water birds, including hawks that nest nearby. The park also has an amphitheater designed for small outdoor events.
There is a beautifully situated restaurant in the garden, where you can try various kinds of Cretan dishes. As the owners assure it is ecological, that is, it is based entirely on local and seasonal ingredients from the local vegetable garden. Some local products can also be bought in a small shop located in the garden.
In this idyllic setting, surely your attention will be drawn by the burnt centuries-old olive tree. It was left as a memory of a huge fire, which in 2004, fully devastated the area around the village of Skordalou. A violent storm from Africa knocked down a pole of electric traction. This seemingly trivial event gave rise to a violent and uncontrolled fire that consumed the entire region around the village in twenty-four hours. The losses were enormous, sixty thousand olive trees over 400 years old and numerous orange trees burned. The village and its inhabitants were ruined both ecologically and financially.
On these ruins, practically from scratch, the four brothers decided to set up a botanical garden, whose main purpose is trekking, education, as well as recreation.
Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete can be visited from 9 am. Last tourists can enter here no later than one hour before sunset. Admission for adults costs 6 euros, for children between 6 and 12 years of age. - 4 euros. Children under 6 years of age they enter the park free of charge.
People who would like to go to the Botanical Garden, but have no plans to rent a car, can take advantage of the bus connection launched between Chania and the Botanical Garden two years ago. The bus leaves daily from the Central Bus Station in Chania at 9.30. The return trip to Chania takes place at 14.45. The cost of one-way ticket is 2.7 €.
If you are going by car, from the center of Chania, first go to Omalos / Samaria and then to Fournes ( Φουρνές). GPS: 35.25.06 N, 23.56, 22 E
