Recently, we often deal with waste management topics on our website. There was already information about the butts left on the beach and today we would like to talk about the plastic cups, which are very often used for serving drinks such as frappe coffee or orange juice. According to various estimates, in Greece at the peak of the holiday season, up to 1 million of this type of packaging is consumed every day.
Most of this rubbish is not processed and is exported directly to landfills, where it slowly decomposes, which lasts for decades. Some of the used packages carried by gusts of wind eventually reach the sea, where they are a real threat to animals inhabiting this environment. These wastes are also often found on the days of the seas and oceans.
The concern for the natural environment and the concern about the condition in which we will leave it for future generations was the proverbial spark that gave birth in Greece to a new initiative: stopotirimou.gr . The aim of this project implemented in cooperation with GreenPeace is to reduce the consumption of disposable packaging used to sell beverages. Action organizers want to achieve this effect by encouraging Greeks and tourists visiting this country to use their own reusable cups.
Additionally, as part of the program, a network of cafes and eating places is created in which every customer using his own cup can count on lower prices of purchased beverages. For the time being, the number of places offering discounts is relatively small, as in the whole of Greece it reaches 186 units (in Crete it is 36 premises). The organizers of the action, however, expect that along with the popularity of this campaign, the number of seats will systematically grow.
A detailed list of places can be found directly on the program website and on the map below.
We are happy that over time in Greece there is growing awareness of the need to protect the environment and care for natural resources. As part of the preparations for the next trip, we will definitely look for some interesting alternative for disposable packaging. Or maybe you have some interesting examples of cups used by you every day.

Słomki to też poważny problem.

CRETE - Kreta to prawda. Nie zauważają go I często celowo omijają.
