Renovation of the fortress at Frangokastello

The fortress located in Frangokastello is one of the most characteristic and at the same time recognizable monuments located in this region of Crete. Particularly impressive is the building when it is viewed from the beach. However, if you visited this fortress inside, you could certainly feel a certain disappointment. Its interior consists of several remains of former buildings, and the only attraction is the opportunity to climb one of the corner towers. Everything, however, indicates that in the future this may change dramatically.

Yesterday, the mayor of Sfakia along with the deputy governor of the Crete region signed documents confirming the inclusion of a project to revitalize the fortress of Frangokastello to the operational program "Crete 2014-2020". Thanks to this decision, the region's authorities will be able to reach for co-financing from EU funds included in the cohesion fund.

The cost of the first phase of this project is expected to amount to nearly € 1 million. As part of the works, improvement of external infrastructure (including toilets) is expected, restoring the original functionality and appearance of all corner towers, rebuilding the southern buildings of the former military barracks. The plans for the project also include a thorough renovation of the external walls, whose current state, due to numerous cracks, raises serious doubts.

The second phase of this project provides for further revitalization works. According to the initial plans prepared by the employees of the Cretan Polytechnic and archaeological service, the cost of the next stage of work can be about 3 million €. And although for now the representatives of regional authorities are very cautious about the possibilities of its implementation, it will certainly be such a striving. According to their announcements, the completely renovated fortress is to become an important cultural and exhibition center in which the history of this place and the region will be presented. Certainly, it would also raise the rank of this place as a tourist attraction.
