In 2026, Greece once again ranked second in the world for the number of beaches awarded the Blue Flag, traditionally second only to Spain. This year, the distinctive Blue Flags will appear on 624 Greek beaches, 17 marinas, and 17 tourist boats. This prestigious distinction demonstrates the highest standards of water purity, safety, and accessibility of beach infrastructure. Crete, made up of four prefectures, remained the leader among Greek regions, receiving a total of 154 awards: 152 for beaches and two for marinas. The prefecture with the most awards was Chalkidiki, with 93 flags.
The annual rankings are published by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), which coordinates the Blue Flag program in Greece. This year, 52 countries participated, recognizing 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas, and 158 tourist boats. Greece accounts for 15% of all beaches receiving these awards this year.
Spanish record
For comparison, here's the number of beaches awarded in other countries. Spain, which annually takes first place, achieved an unprecedented record this year, receiving 677 beach awards. In Turkey [3rd place], the flag will appear on 550 beaches, and in Italy [4th place], on 525. Interestingly, in Poland, 31 beaches and 4 marinas received the Blue Flag, placing our country in 19th place in the ranking.
Albania rounds out the list of countries that received awards, with only one beach honored. This is worth noting, as for several years now, holidays in Albania have been promoted as a cheaper alternative to more expensive destinations in Greece or Italy.
Blue Flag in Crete
In Crete, the total number of distinguished beaches remained the same (154) compared to last year. However, some spots did not receive the distinction, but new ones appeared in their place. The number of distinguished spots on the island, broken down by prefecture, is as follows:
Since 1987, the Blue Flag has been awarded to beaches and marinas that meet rigorous requirements and criteria. Over the past decade, the Blue Flag has become the most recognizable and popular international symbol of high-quality beaches and marinas worldwide. A uniform standard for this award was developed in 2001 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in Denmark. In Greece, the Blue Flag is awarded by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), which coordinates the program.
Bottle flags
Interestingly, since 2021, the distinctive blue flags have been made from 100% recycled PET bottles. They are collected at supermarkets and other collection points in Western Europe. The bottles are chopped into small flakes, which are then melted into polyester yarn, which is then spun into the fabric ultimately used to produce the flags.
The birth of an idea
The history of this distinction dates back to 1985, when the idea of recognizing coastal municipalities with high water quality was born in France. Two years later, in 1987, the idea was launched as an official European program known as the Blue Flag. Initially, the awards were intended to encourage bathing area operators to comply with the European Council Directive on the reduction of bathing water pollution and the protection thereof from further contamination (Council Directive 76/160/EEC of 8 December 1975).
Over the next dozen or so years, the simple and clear concept of designating the best beaches and marinas was also positively received by tourists in the European Union. Work began on amending the rules to introduce this distinction in other countries around the world. In 2001, after establishing uniform rules, the label became an international symbol for the best beaches.
What criteria must a beach meet to receive the Blue Flag award?
Beaches vying for the right to use this label must meet 33 criteria imposed by the FEE (38 for marinas and 51 for pleasure boats). A prerequisite for this distinction is excellent water quality. No other quality classification, even "good," is acceptable. Below are the most important criteria taken into account. They are divided into four sections, each with its own detailed requirements.
Clean sea and coast
excellent bathing water quality confirmed by sample testing
a sufficient number of waste and recycling containers, which must be emptied regularly
continuous, regular cleaning of the coast from garbage, cigarette butts, etc.
Coastal organization
posting official results of microbiological analyses on the mandatory notice board
ban on vehicles and mopeds on the coast
camping ban
efficient and clean sanitary facilities
Guest safety
the presence of trained, certified rescuers or direct access to an emergency telephone, rescue equipment and first aid
accessibility and provision of services for persons with disabilities (IDP)
Nature conservation and caring for the natural environment
protection of the coastal zone, in particular protected areas, including flora and fauna
implementing specific educational activities in the field of environmental protection for visitors to the Blue Flag coastal zone
