Profits and Losses of Greek Museums and Excavations in 2025

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) has published its latest 2025 statistics on museum and archaeological site visits. The data shows that Greek monuments were visited by slightly fewer people than in 2024 (-3.2%). However, what is most surprising is the significant increase in revenue.

Financial jump into the deep end

The number of visitors to museums in Greece increased by a mere 0.4% compared to 2024. Archaeological sites even saw a 4.9% drop in visitor numbers. Despite the lower attendance, box office receipts increased dramatically – by 36.2% at museums and by an impressive 44.6% at archaeological sites.

Where do these differences come from? The answer is quite simple, and the cause is predictable: the new pricing policy that came into effect on April 1, 2025, or, to put it simply, ticket price increases.

How do the most important attractions of our island in 2025 rank in this ranking?

• The Heraklion Archaeological Museum had 387,682 visitors, a 2.2% increase compared to the previous year. It was one of the few places on the map to buck the downward trend.
• Despite optimistic forecasts and a strong desire to beat last year's figure, Knossos ultimately failed to reach one million visitors. With 977,299 visitors, it recorded a 3.2% year-on-year decline.
• Phaistos is the worst hit. Visitor numbers fell to 65,431, a nearly 23 percent drop in attendance. This is one of the steepest declines seen at any Greek archaeological site in the country.

The decline in visitation numbers affected not only Phaistos and Knossos. Analyzing visitation numbers at archaeological sites clearly shows that a downward trend of several or more percent occurred at most excavations.

More “free” guests?

An interesting phenomenon is the increase in the number of people taking advantage of free admission. Over the year, over 10% more visitors took advantage of free admission at museums, and 7.7% more at archaeological sites. This may suggest that increasingly higher prices encourage visitors to take advantage of opportunities, plan visits on free admission days, and take advantage of available discounts.

ELSTAT data shows that Greek authorities have embarked on a strategy to maximize profits from every single tourist. Entry limits introduced in many places mean that the infrastructure has reached its capacity limit, and since no more people will enter, they simply have to raise prices to increase revenue.

For tourists, the conclusion is clear: visiting Greece is becoming a luxury item. Last year's statistics show that visitors are prioritizing their travel plans based on must-see attractions and those they can skip.
