The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular sites in the Rethymno prefecture. However, for several weeks now, the road running through the gorge has been closed to traffic due to the removal of loose rock fragments that posed a hazard to those driving through the gorge.
The work at Kourtaliotiko is part of a broader project to secure the gorge walls. In the past, this route has been repeatedly blocked by uncontrolled rockslides. To definitively resolve this recurring problem, approximately €500,000 has been allocated for security work.
The work is focused on a section of approximately 2,300 meters – from the entrance to the gorge from Koxare to the parking lot created by the Agios Vasilios municipality before descending to the springs. After a preliminary assessment of the slopes' stability, specialist climbers have been deployed. Their task is to physically remove loose rock masses that could fall onto the roadway. The strategy is simple: whatever can be lowered in a controlled manner will be removed. Where removal proves impossible, the rocks will be "pinned" to the slope using steel cables and special anchors.
Opening before the holidays
According to announcements, the road is scheduled to open before Easter, significantly improving traffic in this part of Crete. This is good news for tourists planning a spring break, but especially for the local community, which has been forced to take time-consuming detours for months. It remains to be hoped that the work will actually improve safety in the long term.

Remont drogi narodowej
Według zapowiedzi prace remontowe mają potrwać do kwietnia. Może szybciej będzie starą drogą narodową?
