Many people are wondering what's next for the Chania Market Hall? This famous historic building, which has been in use since December 4, 1913, has been undergoing renovation for four years. The hall closed in early 2022, and the owners of the 52 local shops that operated their businesses in the hall were forced to relocate to other premises in Chania. Initially, the renovation schedule was planned to last two years, and the contractor was ambitious, aiming to complete the work in even less than 18 months. Few believed these assurances, and it quickly became clear that the schedule had collapsed like a house of cards.

Initial phase of renovation of the Chania Market Hall - as of 2023
The first cause of the delay in the renovation was the discovery of Venetian walls located just beneath the foundations of the market square. The contractor waited for many months for the Central Archaeological Council (KAΑΣ) to approve the revision of the wall discovery. This institution had to issue recommendations for further reconstruction to best showcase the new discovery. Then, another problem arose, as the company responsible for the renovation changed hands. Various administrative problems also arose. The company that took over the renovation work did not prioritize the project. Desperate shopkeepers, their patience running out, even brought the issue to the attention of leading Greek politicians.
The completion date has been extended several times. In November 2025, Easter this year was set as the next deadline for the renovations. Unfortunately, it is now known that this deadline was not met. At an extraordinary meeting today, the Chania City Council decided by majority vote to extend the project's deadline once again. This time, the final deadline is June 30, 2026.

The Market Hall was not only a tourist attraction, but also a place where local residents could get their supplies.
The opening of the market hall is awaited not only by merchants and locals, but also by tourists. The market hall was one of the most frequently visited places in Chania, and the mere opportunity to buy local products there was recommended by many guidebooks.
