Dead whales off the coast of Crete

Over the past two days, a mass stranding of five whales occurred on the southern coast of Crete . Unfortunately, four of the animals died. The fifth individual, found by local residents in better condition, was successfully returned to the open sea . Unfortunately, its fate remains unknown at this time.

The biggest surprise, however, is the likely cause of these events.

Two goose-headed whales ( Ziphius cavirostris ), which typically live in sea depths below 1,000 meters, washed up on Cretan beaches at almost the same time and in very close proximity. This tragedy has justifiably sparked concern and a flurry of questions about its cause. It is also highly likely that other whales died in the area, whose bodies did not wash ashore due to the prevailing northerly and northwesterly winds.

Such a massive and nearly simultaneous event is rarely accidental , and experts point to a surprising cause.

Zyfias are exceptionally sensitive to certain frequencies . Sudden acoustic pollution can force them to emerge too quickly from the depths where they normally feed. This sudden pressure spike leads to air embolism , which, in their case, is an almost certain death sentence.

The Archipelagos Institute for Marine Conservation, in collaboration with international environmental organizations, has launched a detailed study of the electronic footprint of ships that sailed in the sea area south of Crete. Intense noise pollution may be caused by submarine sonar or seismic surveys .

It's worth noting that in this strategically located body of water, near the Hellenic Trench , the presence of vessels of various nationalities is regularly recorded. Their electronic trace, which should be visible under normal "peaceful" conditions, is often invisible .

An irreversible blow

The tragedy of the situation is compounded by the fact that the zyfids living in the Hellenic Rift do not migrate . They remain in the same region for their entire lives, meaning that the loss of even a few individuals is a blow to the already sparse local population that may prove irreversible .
