From July 1, 2025, Greece is introducing a new fee for ship passengers who will disembark in Greek ports. This is important information for tourists planning cruises around the Greek islands. Disembarkation rates will depend on the season and location. The highest fees will apply to Santorini and Mykonos.
The new fee, the so-called "arrival fee", will be charged for each disembarkation at a given port. It will be paid by passengers on all cruises, both those organized by travel agencies and those on individual trips. Only the crew of the ships will be exempt from the fee. Some cruise lines may automatically add the fee to the cost of the ticket - it is worth checking this when booking.
The fee, which will come into force next Tuesday, will be charged per person and per port, regardless of the length of stay or the form of disembarkation (e.g. by support boat).
In 2024, Greek ports were expected to handle more than 5,500 ship calls and almost 8 million passengers. The new fee will bring Greece hundreds of millions of euros a year, which will be divided between local governments, port authorities and the relevant ministry.
The main objective of introducing the new fee is to limit overtourism in the most crowded destinations, such as Santorini and Mykonos. The fee is also supposed to be painful for one-day tourists from cruise ships, who treat the port as a temporary attraction only. However, these are not the only reasons. As we wrote above, the revenue from the new tax will support the budgets of local communities, which have to handle huge numbers of visitors - often many times more than the number of inhabitants. It will also help maintain and modernize port infrastructure, including rescue, sanitary and transport services. It will also help introduce sustainable tourism development, especially in the context of protecting the natural environment and cultural heritage.
