Next Sunday, May 18, the most important Greek museums will celebrate the International Museum Day. On this day, many of the most important sites will offer not only free admission but also interesting educational meetings and events. This year, the theme of this annual celebration is "Museums and societies in constant change". So if you are in Crete or other regions of Greece, it is worth taking this opportunity to visit the museums in the area.
The theme of this year's celebration is to encourage the search for new ways of preserving and deepening our cultural identity, promoting intangible heritage and strengthening the role of museums in social development. It is also important to search for new, innovative forms of cooperation and engagement of young people. New technologies that we currently have can help adapt the operation of museums to the new needs of a changing world.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is dedicating this day to presenting the history of the Minoan palace at Zakros in Crete. At 7:00 PM in the Conference Room, Professor Lefteris Platon will lead a meeting with the public, while at 8:00 PM there will be a screening of the film "Zakros". The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with guests.
At the same time, a series of guided tours will be held at the Museum on this day. The Heraklion Museum is probably known to most people who have visited Crete and is a must-see for every Crete enthusiast. It is also worth mentioning that the Greek section of the International Council of Museums has awarded the Heraklion Archaeological Museum a distinction for 2025. It is therefore worth taking advantage of the opportunity for free entry and taking a look at the rich collections of this institution.
The Historical Museum of Crete in Heraklion will also participate in the celebrations of International Museum Day. The program of the celebrations includes an educational tour available to all. The tour will take place on Saturday, May 17, at 11:00. The main theme is the history of women who played a role in shaping local history. Unfortunately, in the case of the above meetings, we do not have information whether they will be held in English.
The Archaeological Museum of Chania will also participate in the Museum Day celebrations. On Sunday, from 11:00 to 13:00, a “digital toolbox” will be presented. This action focuses on using new technologies to promote cultural heritage, with the aim of ensuring accessibility, participation and modernization of the museum experience. The Museum’s digital toolbox includes augmented and virtual reality applications, interactive digital games and multimedia content, the possibility of connecting to online platforms and social networks, and tools for presenting archaeological materials to audiences of all ages and abilities. Participation in this event is free of charge, as is admission to all the museum’s exhibition spaces on this day.
On this day, free entry is also offered to the largest archaeological sites in Crete: Knossos, Gortyna, Phaistos and Agia Triada.
