The Organization for the Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) today announced the planned opening of the Samaria National Park. The trail leading through the gorge will open to visitors next Tuesday, May 6, 2025. It will be accessible immediately along its entire length, from the northern entrance at Xyloskalo to the southern entrance at Agia Roumeli .
Before the start of the season, OFYPEKA carried out all required trail maintenance, infrastructure repairs and other works necessary for the proper handling of tourist traffic on the trail.
This year, for the first time, an application will be introduced that will warn about the possibility of intense and extreme weather phenomena occurring in specific critical points of the gorge within the next two hours.
This year, the Samaria National Park regulations emphasize that visitors to the gorge take full responsibility for their safety in the gorge and accept the risks associated with staying there, as well as during sudden and unforeseen events. Visitors are also required to take all measures they deem necessary to ensure their safety. These are new provisions in the regulations that appeared after a fatal accident that occurred in September last year.
In addition, persons staying within the State Forests are obliged to strictly comply with any extraordinary arrangements or prohibitions on staying within the area and to follow the instructions of employees and relevant services.
A surprise that is not mentioned in any of the articles announcing the opening of the gorge is the new price list for entrance tickets to Samaria.
This year, a single adult ticket will cost €10, which means a 100 percent increase. Free entry is available to children under 18, people over 65, and students of EU universities. To use this option, you will need to show your ID or passport at the ticket office. Students will need to show their student ID.
Free entry to the gorge is also possible during the year: 21 May (European Natura 2000 Day) and 5 June (World Environment Day).
Tickets can also be purchased online: https://samaria-tickets.necca.gov.gr/el/checkout
