The long-awaited renovation of the Market Hall in Chania began in early 2022. After 109 years of uninterrupted operation, the building was closed and handed over to the contractor, and the owners of 52 local shops who had previously run their businesses in the Hall had to move to other premises in Chania. The renovation works were scheduled for two years, and the contractor initially ambitiously declared that the works would be completed within a shorter period of 18 months.

After the renovation began, it quickly became clear that the agreed schedule would not be met. The first reason for the delay in the renovation was the discovery of the Venetian walls just below the foundations of the market. The contractor waited for many months for the Central Archaeological Council (ΚΑΣ) to approve the revision of the discovery of the walls, which had to issue recommendations for further reconstruction in order to best display the new discovery.
Later, another problem arose as the owner of the company carrying out the reconstruction changed and various administrative problems arose.
Unfortunately, although more than 3 years have passed since the renovation began, there is still no end in sight. Shop owners who are still waiting to return to their former premises are outraged by the long delays. Recently, there was even a meeting of the board of the Association of Merchants of the Municipal Market of Chania with the city authorities and members of parliament from Chania.
After the meeting, it was reported that "although past issues have been resolved, financing for the project is maintained and there are essentially no outstanding debts to the contractor and delays related to late completion of work. The contracting company is not prioritizing the project for reasons that have not been disclosed."
The Association's representatives hope that the pressure exerted by the city authorities on the contractor will finally bring results. Not only merchants and residents of the city but also tourists are waiting for the opening of the Hall. The market hall was one of the most frequently visited places in Chania, and the possibility of shopping there was an attraction.
