African dust over Europe

According to Kostas Kagouvardos, a meteorologist from the National Observatory in Athens, tomorrow a high concentration of African dust is expected in Greece. The dust is expected to reach primarily western Greece and the Ionian Sea region. In the case of Crete, a particularly high concentration of dust is expected in the Chania region. The meteorologist warns that the increase in dustiness will be accompanied by high temperatures, which will create very unfavourable conditions for the inhabitants of these regions. Interestingly, according to the predictions of the DUST/METEO model, the transfer of dust is expected to be so large that it is expected to reach many countries in northern and eastern Europe, including Poland.

The phenomenon of dust blowing from the Sahara is nothing special in Greece. It is a fairly typical event that occurs particularly often in late winter and spring. This phenomenon was once analyzed by Swedish scientists who, based on the study of the chemical composition of the collected samples, determined that the vast majority of pollution blown by southern winds comes from Tunisia. This is due to the characteristic shape of the country and the large number of seasonal rivers, whose dry beds are an excellent source of dust.

Where there is heavy dust, it seriously impedes everyday functioning and has a negative impact on health.

African dust carries particles of a wide range of sizes, such as PM10, PM2.5 or even much smaller, as well as other pollutants from the atmosphere. An increase in the concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere can worsen respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and allergies. People with existing respiratory diseases and heart disease are particularly vulnerable during periods of increased dust concentrations.

Greek pulmonologists recommend that during periods of high air pollution, intensive physical activity should be limited, especially if performed outdoors. Special recommendations apply to the elderly, the weakened, and children. Greeks also know that it is important to close windows and doors to prevent dust particles from entering buildings, to use air filters, and to ensure proper hydration. Hanging laundry out at this time is also not a good idea ;)

The weather is expected to improve from the upcoming holiday Saturday.
