Tourist missing in Samaria Gorge

Today, the services of the Chania prefecture were involved in the search for a tourist missing in the Samaria Gorge. The unusual nature of this rescue operation results from the fact that it is currently the middle of winter and the trail leading through this place has been closed for a good few months. Despite everything, it is in this gorge and its surroundings that a large-scale search operation for the 21-year-old tourist from Germany is being carried out.

The tourist's disappearance was reported on Saturday evening to the owner of the car rental company, who realized that the rented car had not been returned on the agreed date. He first tried to contact the tourist by phone. Unfortunately, the tourist's mobile phone did not answer, so on Saturday evening he reported the man missing to the police station in Chania.

A search for the 21-year-old was immediately launched. It was determined that the young man was on vacation alone in Chania, where he was checked into a hotel. Last Thursday, he drove a rented white Mazda off-road vehicle to the Omalos plateau in Xyloskalo. He parked the car there and headed for the entrance to Samaria. The car was quickly found, as it was still parked at the entrance to the gorge.

This morning, an intensive search for the man began early in the morning. Not only the police from Chania were involved in the operation, but also the fire department, forestry and coastal guards. Unfortunately, the missing tourist has not been found so far. The services searched the entire trail of the Samaria National Park. Their work was not made easier by the low temperature and rain.

It is not known whether the missing person was properly prepared for the hike through Samaria. The trail is closed at this time of year, and the conditions there are exceptionally difficult. During the search, only a shoe was found, which probably belonged to the missing tourist.

The coast guard was led to another trail by the residents of Agia Roumeli, who claim to have seen a man in the village who resembled the wanted man. He was supposed to have boarded a ferry to Paleochora on Friday evening. Unfortunately, no other traces have been found to confirm this version. They have also failed to locate the missing tourist's mobile phone.
