The latest data shows that at the end of the year, some areas of Crete saw more than twice as much rainfall than during the same period last year. December in particular is a much "wetter" month compared to last year's December. The greater rainfall has helped to make up for the water shortages in Crete, but so far, not enough water has yet reached the dams.
Since yesterday the weather in Crete has deteriorated significantly, and the long-awaited snow has finally appeared in the Cretan mountains.
The above photo comes from www.kriti24.gr and was taken by Pavlos Bouzakis.
The White Mountains are covered in white fluff, although the highest parts of the mountains have definitely the most white blanket. There is little snow in the lower regions. The snowfall in the mountains has continued today, so there is a chance that the regions located slightly lower in the mountains will also be evenly covered in snow. According to the media, the road leading to the Omalos plateau is currently snow-covered, so warnings have been issued to avoid traveling this route if possible.
The mountains surrounding the Lassithi plateau in the eastern part of the island have also seen a more wintry scene, with warnings being issued for drivers heading to that part of Crete.
